We are unable to issue letters/certificates stating patients are ‘fit to fly’. Assessing whether someone can fly falls outside our area of expertise as General Practitioners (GPs) and the clinical risk associated.
The BMA advises that there is no statutory requirement for GPs to complete Fit to Fly airline forms for patients.
Your hospital team will be better placed than us to inform your airline of some conditions. Pregnant women may be able to obtain the required paperwork from their midwife team.
We recommend you seek advice from your airline and airport to make sure you know exactly what you need to travel. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
As a practice, we follow the Civil Aviation Authority guidelines (a national standard) on fitness to fly.
